Costa Rica 2008

Tomorrow is my last day on the water, fishing with the Super Fly one more time. Although we have groups scheduled through the end of April, I'll be heading home sometime mid-week and gearing up for the Roanoke. Fishing remains good, still catching 7-10 sails/day.

I have reserved all available dates on The Super Fly, The Spanish Fly and our new boat, The Dragin Fly. These dates are booking up VERY fast. If you plan on coming to Costa Rica in Jan-March 2008, contact me ASAP so we can schedule time for you on one of the best boats in the marina.

Tournament Report

Big congratulations to Capt. Jay Blount and his customers who fished on the Barbarosa during the second leg of The Los Suenos Invitational Billfish Tournament. Against all odds, these gringos beat most of the fleat of locals and took 3rd place for $29,000. Pretty work guys.

The Bite, with captain Marvin won the tournament. The Spanish Fly and The Super Fly both finished well, but no checks.

The next day we had customers on The Barbarosa and The Bite.......we got a very late start.

On The Barbarosa, 7 sails and 3 very large hang overs.

On The Bite, 4 giant sails and the striped marlin below by lunch, siesta by the pool at 2 pm.

Girls Rule, # 50 on the fly

Congratulations Capt. Sarah Gardner on Costa Rica sail #50 on the fly. Glad that I could be there for a couple of them. As usual, thanks for the clinic.

Sarah's fly.

Sarah's fish:

Capt. Joe Shute and a sail that bit a fly, but he caught on a spinning rod.

I'll let him tell the story.

Reaching out a little too far.....Captain Tony took a plunge.

Nice double header roosterfish and corvina. A corvina is kind of like a giant speckled trout, except they can get over 40 pounds.

report

All is going well here, catching between 6 and 10 sails/boat/day. Also enough wahoo bites to have caught one each of the last two days while using circle hooks and mono.

all the diference that a day makes

It's nice how things can turn around in just a day. With a slow day yesterday and rumors of schools of sardines that showed up along the beach, The Spanish Fly and The Super Fly started off inshore fishing. I was on the Super Fly and we quickly found the sardines, catching about 30 to take to the beach and look for roosterfish. Danny on the Spanish Fly caught about a dozen sardines, but took them offshore in hopes of finding a school of tuna or chunking them to the many sails that were seen yesterday, finning on the surface.

The roosterfish bite started off with a bang, catching a "nice un" and a few little guys on the Super Fly. Meanwhile, Danny was back in the sailfish, but there was no need for live bait, there were plenty of hot sailfish piling on to the teasers and ballyhoo.

The Spanish Fly ended up landing 19 sails and missing a big blue marlin.

On The Super Fly, after catching a few roosters, mackeral, an African Pompano (I think) and a bunch of jacks, we headed offshore and managed to beat down 5 sails. The Dream 1 also caught a handful of sails.

Here are a few pics:

What happened to the bite?

A dozen sails/boat just a few days ago, today, 4 boats fished with our customers:
Spanish Fly: 4 sails
R and J: 3 sails, 1 BIG marlin that ended up busting off
Dream 1: 2 sails
Super Fly: 1 sail

Yesterday the highlight of the day was the Spanish Fly picking up the crew and customers out of the water, the boat that they were fishing on caught fire, burned and sunk. Pretty awesome pictures if I can get them off of Danny's camera.

I get to fish tomorrow, trying to change the luck on the Super Fly.
