60 pound drum and 16 flounder

Greg caught 10 big drum yesterday afternoon and left them biting. I hope to get a pic from his customer of a true pig. On the fish weight calculator at www.ncwaterman.com she came out to be between 60 and 65 pounds.

While Greg was finishing up drum fishing, Capt. Ray was putting the air boat in the water for some flounder gigging. He had no problem gigging 16 very nice flounder by 10 pm.

catching up and catching ....

The Catching Up:
I hope to have some pics up soon, the Young Ford crowd beat me and Greg up pretty bad the last couple of days and we each fished this afternoon. I'll be back in the office on Tuesday, sorry for the delayed returned e mails and phone calls.

The Catching: Friday and Saturday were mixed bag days with everything from 5 pound speks to striped bass and American eels. Of course plenty of drum of all sizes. There are still a few big ones around, I caught 5 this afternoon and Greg was across the river from me and he caught 9.

Shifting gears...

I expected it to end overnight, just not last night. I predicted that the full moon on Oct. 6 would be the end of the big drum fishing on the western Pamlico Sound/Neuse River. Apparantly things have started to wind down a little earlier than I expected, in a large part due to the slug of brackish water that has finally made it down the river.

On the other hand, the light tackle mixed bag fishing for trout and puppies should be spectacular through Thanksgiving and into the winter depending on the water temps.

Greg and Ray have done a good job of shifting gears over the past two days, targetting the puppy drum and trout, then setting up late in the afternoon for the best of the big drum fishing, catching between 3 and 12 per afternoon.

Greg caught 8 trout, 35 puppies and yearlings and 3 big drum on Friday. Ray caught 14 big drum that afternoon. Yesterday was more of the same, plenty of pups and a handful of big ones. Something for dinner and something to brag about....

Georgia Boys' count

Del, Tommy and James started and finished the trip with a bang, catching 24 big drum on day 1. Yesterday, they wanted a few fish for dinner, first stop we caught 6 nice trout, second stop 4 keeper puppy drum and we left them biting to go after the big drum. I forced them into trying another trout hole and we caught 12 more very nice trout in about 30 minutes. They ended the afternoon with 13 more big drum. That's 119 big drum in 5 trips.

We just had a cancellation for Saturday. Also openings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

final count

Jim broubht a little help yesterday and today, Steve and Jay. We caught 26 yesterday, but found them late. We caught 31 by 4:00 pm today. Between Greg, Rick, Ray and myself, well over 100 citation releases today.

Anna's birthday tomorrow, so I'll be off the water and I'll need my rest. Del and the Georgia Boys are coming for two days, then "Never Enough" is back for 3 more days.

numbers.....

I hesitate to post numbers for fear of setting expectations too high for upcoming trips, after all, isn't 2 or 3 citations per person a great day? "Never Enough" caught 25 citations by himself this afternoon, a notable accomplishment. He'll want 26 tomorrow.

Rain days, office work, citations, CR openings

Catching up on office work, but I'll be after them for the next few days. The next break that I get, I'll be working on citations.

I have a pretty good record of who fished with me and what they caught, but if you fished with Greg or Ray and want a citation.....send me the names, date, # of red drum releases over 40 inches. (I think that I can count the tarpon numbers with both hands)

We are finalizing details on our Costa Rica trips, please forward your airline information when it is available.

We have 1 or 2 openings coming up to Silver King Oct. 13-18, if you have any interest, drop me a line. Wink. Wink.

For Costa Rica 2007 Pacific sailfish trips, we have fishing days available on: Jan. 18, 19, 20, 21, Feb. 17, 18, 19 and March 9, 10, 11. There may also be some opportunities for singles if you can't get a group of 4 together. There are other boats available if these dates don't work. Now is the time to book.
